   Correctional Officer Gary Weinke died from complications after contracting coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) during an ongoing global pandemic.

   His last day of work was on March 29 and he was hospitalized at Terre Haute Regional Hospital with symptoms of the disease where he later passed away.

   Correctional Officer Weinke, from Linton, was assigned to the Special Confinement Unit of the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility near Carlisle where his wife also serves as a correctional officer.

   He was survived by his wife, Naomi (née Sturgis); sons, James (Christy) Weinke, Travis (Tonya) Bough and Nathan (April) Bough; daughters, Michelle (Brian) Wilmouth, Amy (Doug) Chisman and Lacey (Tracy Cobb) Bough; 17 grandchildren; one great grandson; brothers, Terry Weinke and Lonny (Terri) Weinke; and sisters, Sandra (Cliff) Rayl and Nita (Brett) Clem.

• Correctional Officer Weinke is the third of five Indiana line of duty deaths in 2020.
• He is the 14th line of duty death of the Indiana Department of Correction.
• His line of duty death is the fourth that has originated from Sullivan County.
As of February 1, 2024, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused 1,180,042 deaths in the United States and 26,307 deaths in Indiana. From November 2020 through January 2021, the deadliest wave was responsible for 7,140 deaths with the highest occurring in December 2020 when 3,038 died statewide. The pandemic has caused 874 known law enforcement officer deaths in the United States.
