Officer Charles Schmitt died from injuries he suffered after being involved in a two-vehicle accident while on afternoon patrol.

His motorcycle struck a vehicle whose driver was making a left-hand turn in front of him without signaling, causing him to be thrown to the pavement and run over by the vehicle.

Officer Schmitt was taken to St. Mary's Hospital with three fractures in his left leg. He was never able to return to work and was pensioned in December 1930. Over one and a half years later, he died from complications from those injuries.

The 66-year-old male driver was charged with reckless driving.

Officer Schmitt was survived by his wife, father and two sisters.
