Motorcycle Policeman James Reilly was killed in a three-vehicle accident when his motorcycle collided with two other vehicles in the late afternoon.

As he attempted to pass a westbound car traveling in front of him, the driver began to make a left-hand turn onto Doerre Avenue.

His motorcycle struck the rear bumper causing his motorcycle to be thrown into the eastbound lane when both were struck by an oncoming vehicle, killing him instantly.

Motorcycle Policeman Reilly was single and survived by his mother, two sisters and three brothers, one of whom was also a member of the department.

The responsibilities of the Indianapolis Police Department (1854–2006) are now under the jurisdiction of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
