Trooper Steven Bailey was accidentally shot and killed when his weapon discharged while serving an arrest warrant during a heroin investigation at the Woodward Apartments in Indianapolis.

The 26-year-old male offender, a known drug dealer, was wanted for failure to appear on charges of speeding, improper vehicle registration and driving without a license.

As Trooper Bailey and another trooper attempted to force open the rear patio door, his .45-caliber revolver with the barrel pointed upward, fired. The bullet entered his chin and lodged in his brain.

Upon hearing the gunfire, another trooper and a county probation officer entered the front door of the apartment and arrested the offender. Trooper Bailey was airlifted from the scene to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis where he died five hours later.

Trooper Bailey, from Richmond, was assigned to General Headquarters. He was single and survived by his mother.
