Trooper Roy Jones was killed in a single-vehicle accident while responding to assist the Markleville town marshal and a Madison County sheriff's deputy who had stopped a vehicle they had pursued after running a stop sign.

He was traveling eastbound on State Road 38 with lights and siren when another car pulled out in front of him on a curve.

In an attempt to avoid a collision, he swerved and struck a tree, causing massive internal injuries and was dead on arrival at Community Hospital in Anderson.

Trooper Jones, from Lapel, was assigned to the Pendleton post. He was survived by his wife, daughter, three sons, parents, sister and brother.
