Patrolman Herbert Long was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a man as he investigated a suspicious vehicle being driven in the area without headlights.

As Patrolman Long approached the vehicle with two occupants, the driver opened fire and struck him in the head, killing him instantly.

The subjects abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene. The man was apprehended the following day at the home of the female who was his passenger.

The 33-year-old suspect was charged with first-degree murder and in a change of venue to Sullivan County, later sentenced to life in prison where he died in 1936.

Patrolman Long was survived by his wife.
