   Lieutenant Deputy James Mumford was killed in a single-vehicle accident on U.S. 31 just south of Lakeville.

   As he was traveling northbound returning to the county jail after having transported prisoners to the Indiana State Farm in Putnamville, his vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree.

   Lieutenant Deputy Mumford, from South Bend, was survived by his wife, son, grandchild, brother and two sisters. His son later retired after having served as a police officer with the South Bend Police Department.
