Patrolman Neil McIntyre died from injuries he suffered in a two-vehicle accident on Christmas Eve when he and another motorcycle officer were attempting to locate a priest to escort him to a hospital.

After a 25-year-old University of Notre Dame student had been found on the pilot of an eastbound New York Central Railroad engine as it reached Elkhart, a particular priest had been requested to administer the last rites to him at Elkhart General Hospital.

As Patrolman McIntyre approached the Grand Trunk Railway tracks on Michigan Street south of Western Avenue, he struck the other officer's motorcycle at the blocked crossing and died early on Christmas morning.

Patrolman McIntyre was survived by his wife.
