Officer Bradley Matteson was killed in a two-vehicle accident after leaving the scene of another accident.

   His patrol vehicle, upon being struck by a semitrailer which had run a red light, flipped over crushing the driver's side doors. Once extricated, Officer Matteson was transported to Parkview Memorial Hospital in Fort Wayne where he died several hours later.

   The 32-year-old semitrailer driver later pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter. His sentence was suspended, he was placed on probation and discharged in 2005.

   Officer Matteson had planned to retire in 2001. He was survived by his wife, 6- and 13-year-old sons, 8-year-old daughter, parents and two brothers.
