Patrolman Kenneth Stiverson was shot and killed by a former patient at the Richmond State Hospital who had commandeered a public transit bus.
After the man had beaten the driver, he then exited the bus and while walking away spotted Patrolman Stiverson and his partner who were in a city ambulance. He threw a brick, breaking their windshield, and ordered them out of the vehicle.
The 35-year-old mentally ill subject then killed Patrolman Stiverson with a shot to his back before wounding his partner with three shots. His partner was able to return fire, striking the suspect in the head, killing him.
Patrolman Stiverson was transported to Parkview Memorial Hospital where he died a half-hour later.
Patrolman Stiverson was survived by his wife, daughter, five sons, sister, brother and mother. In memory of his service, Patrolman Stiverson's badge number, 154, was adopted by the Fort Wayne Police Department and Allen County Sheriff's Department as their radio signal for an officer needing assistance.
