Cause of Death:Patrolman Louis Massey was shot and killed while questioning a suspect.
He was on routine patrol when the owner of a local saloon told him a man had just left the establishment without paying for a beer. As Patrolman Massey questioned him, the suspect pulled out a handgun and shot him in the abdomen.
He was able to return fire and wounded the suspect before he was transported to Deaconess Hospital where he died.
The 33-year-old offender died from his wounds while in custody at the Indiana Reformatory in Jeffersonville on July 31, 1903.
Patrolman Massey was survived by his wife and child.
