Patrolman Louis Massey was shot and killed while questioning a suspect.

He was on routine patrol when the owner of a local saloon told him a man had just left the establishment without paying for a beer. As Patrolman Massey questioned him, the suspect pulled out a handgun and shot him in the abdomen.

He was able to return fire and wounded the suspect before he was transported to Deaconess Hospital where he died on Independence Day.

The 33-year-old offender died from his wounds while in custody at the Indiana Reformatory in Jeffersonville a month later.

Patrolman Massey was survived by his wife and child.
