   Chief of Police Samuel Cardwell died over a year after being struck by a vehicle while directing traffic at a college football game.

   He suffered injuries to his leg while directing traffic after Indiana hosted Notre Dame in a loss at Memorial Stadium with 16,000 in attendance.

   His injuries caused him to leave the police department and his health continued to decline until his death at Fletcher's Sanatorium over a year later.

   Chief of Police Cardwell was single and survived by a sister.
