Detective Julius Gunther was shot and killed as he and other officers searched an apartment building for a man wanted in a shooting at a nearby pool hall.
He was shot in the chest and transported to Mercy Hospital where he died shortly after his arrival.
The 27-year-old suspect was arrested a week later in Chicago. He was subsequently convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison but was paroled in 1933.
Detective Gunther was survived by his wife and three small children.
