Trooper Lawrence Meyer suffered a fatal heart attack while chasing a prisoner who had just escaped from the Clark County Jail in Jeffersonville.

He and his partner had arrested two men after pursuing their vehicle on Interstate 65 in Clark County and booked them into the jail. One suspect was charged with speeding and driving under the influence while the other was charged with public intoxication.

As the troopers were still in the parking lot, a sheriff's deputy advised them the 22-year-old offender had just escaped. Trooper Meyer began to chase the prisoner but was found a short time later in the yard of a residence after suffering a heart attack.

He was transported to Clark County Memorial Hospital in Jeffersonville where he died shortly after his arrival.

Trooper Meyer, from Sellersburg, was assigned to the Charlestown post. He was survived by his wife, son, stepson and mother. His son currently serves as an officer with the Borden Police Department.
