Patrolman Donald Winn died from a gunshot wound he suffered 10 days earlier while he and his partner investigated a burglary at Dependable Motors.

When the officers found the car dealership had been broken into, they entered the building and walked towards the office. As the suspects heard the officers approaching, one of them opened fire and struck Patrolman Winn in the chest.

His partner returned fire and took the suspects into custody. Patrolman Winn died from his wound 10 days later at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.

Both men were convicted and sentenced to life in prison in a change of venue to Lawrence County. The 31-year-old shooter was paroled in 1986, while the 23-year-old offender was paroled in 1984.

Patrolman Winn was survived by his wife, 7-month-old son and parents. His father had served with the Indiana State Police and retired as a detective.
