Sergeant Jimmie Baker was shot and killed while he and another officer were transporting a prisoner to the Scott County Jail.

They had arrested the man for drunken driving who drove into a utility pole and after taking him to Scott County Hospital for treatment, he was returned to their custody.

As the officers were transporting him to the jail the 29-year-old suspect produced a hidden weapon and shot both officers in the back of the head.

The second officer, who was driving and seriously wounded, was able to return fire and killed the suspect.

Both officers were taken to Jewish Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky, where Sergeant Baker died from his wounds early the next morning.

Sergeant Baker was survived by his wife, son, daughter, parents and two sisters.
