Deputy Sheriff Fred Certain died from gunshot wounds suffered three days earlier while attempting to arrest a subject who had earlier killed Grant County Constable Frank Ury.

Constable Ury was attempting to serve a writ of ejectment on a subject for non-payment of $50 worth of rent when he was shot and killed.

The man barricaded himself inside his home and opened fire on responding deputies, wounding Deputy Certain who died three days later at Grant County Hospital.

The 67-year-old suspect was subsequently convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison where he died in 1942.

Deputy Sheriff Certain, from Marion, was survived by his wife.
